Lots of marigolds are still blooming brightly in Bolingbrook in spite of the cooler fall weather.  Their warm, golden colors mean they combine beautifully with pumpkins and mums.

Marigolds are also a traditional flower for Day of the Dead celebrations.  If you grow marigolds, you can easily save the seeds for next year’s garden.

You can start the seeds indoors to control where and when they start to grow, or you can just sprinkle them in your flower bed.  Either way, you may get some surprises– seeds collected from hybrid varieties sometimes grow into plants that don’t look like the parents, and you may produce your own hybrids if different types of marigolds were growing near each other.
